Was considering an old Dell server for a basis replacing a dead QNAP, but through reading many threads, decided against that. I'm slowly buying parts and currently have a node 804 case along with 4x4tb wd red and 4x10tb n300 Toshiba drives. Found a Supermicro X11SSH-F that I could pair with a E3-1245v5.

This would be for NAS/Plex mainly... any thoughts?

The 4TB WD Red drives may be SMR. Be sure that yours aren't. If they are SMR, they are completely unsuitable for any kind of ZFS or NAS application.

The X11 is a solid platform; you can't go wrong there. I'd recommend starting with 2x 16GB RAM sticks. That way you can expand to 64GB if needed.

For your boot device, I'd recommend an SSD over a USB stick. If you use all 8 drives, that would add a requirement for a PCIe HBA.

You should be fine to mix with any other DDR4-2133 ECC memory.
