SSD suggestions?

I'm looking to buy a couple of SSDs around 1 TB in size, and this is a segment of the market where I just don't know what I don't know (SLC? MLC? 3D NAND? etc.). I'm sure I could just buy something from Crucial or SanDisk and be OK, but other than the obvious specs of capacity and price, I'm a little lost. Here's what I do know:
  • 2.5" SATA seems like it would be the best form factor/interface for my system
  • These are for data storage, not SLOG, so power loss protection isn't really necessary.
  • Price is more important than performance, but I'm still looking for good-quality devices that I can reasonably expect to last a long time.
Any particular thoughts? Or should I just buy whatever's cheapest on newegg.com from a decent brand?

Does it have to be 2.5"?
I guess it doesn't have to, but if it is I can use a drive adapter and whack it in a hot-swap bay--no need to go digging in the chassis, which it would be nice to avoid. I also don't have any current support for M.2 in my system, so I'd need some form of adapter card.

Only reason I offer this option up is that a 2.5" form factor is going to be SATA based a limit the performance potential. And the price of SSD's seem to be going up so whatever you need you might want to get moving on it soon. That drive I linked above could have been had for around $90 before the end of last year.

@danb35 on what kind of ssd did you settle? I'm in the same position right now, looking for ssd data storage (mainly jails space).

The jails issue got forced by the sudden and complete death of the single SSD that housed them--rather than wait a few days to get new SSDs from Amazon, I just put them on my main storage pool. I did recently buy a few as boot disks for my Proxmox servers, though; those were Samsung 860s.

I've read to look out on 3D NAND and certain TRIM problems. Is there a comprehensive list on what ssd storage is FreeNAS-worry-free?
