In some instances I have a pool that looks something like this:
tank
tank/a-windows-server-system-drive
tank/a-windows-server-data-drive
tank/user-docs-share
tank/managers-share
tank/deployment-files
...etc
I want to snapshot tank (and everything underneath) every 15 minutes, but I only want to replicate tank/user-docs-share and tank/managers-share off to a remote NAS.
The current system only allows you to auto-snapshot 'tank' and replicate 'tank'.
It also doesn't allow for me to say:
Snapshot everything every 15 minutes and store it for 24 hours.
Snapshot everything every 1 hour and store it for 2 days
Snapshot everything every 12 hours and store it for a week
Snapshot everything on Monday morning at 1 AM and store it for 1 month
Snapshot everything on the 1st of the month at 1 AM and store it for 6 months
...etc...
Doing this appears to break replication.
ZFS on Linux has a nice daemon that lets you set retention periods for, monthly, weekly, daily, hourly, and frequent snapshots.
There doesn't appear to be a replication component for it yet like in FreeNAS.
