Hi folks, I am a bit green to this type of issue as usually this works fine for me but I have a Freenas 11.2 instance that the SMB service fails to start. Can anyone provide me with any guidance on where to look at this one, I assume it is a file permission issue.

what error message do you get? Is there anything in any of the relevant files in /var/log?

Which log file would show SMB errors in that folder?

Aside from /var/log/messages, you have both log.nmbd and log.smbd, I believe, in the samba4 subdirectory in var/log

The messages file is quite big so I am going to rename that one to have it create a new one but here are the other two.

Big thank you for looking for me.

Is it normal for /var/logs to have a virtual pointer to something like /var/db/system/syslog-a7c4a4a3d45a4720a1e6b8ad799731fd/log/
