SMB file locking for teams

The first SMB user opens an After Effects project and leaves it open. The second one opens the file, makes changes to it, and saves. This writes over the file the first user still has open.

Is there any way to put a file lock on it, so it can't be written over? The file server I'm trying to replace (non-FreeNAS) currently has features that allow these files to lock. Testing this out with Mac clients.

You should be able to play with adding Auxiliary parameters to make that work:
Look here under the section for locking:

@anodos may be able to offer more specific advice.

I've spent countless hours trying various Auxiliary Parameters on the share to get it to work, but no dice.

It seems strange that there is so little info out there on such an essential feature for people working on the same Adobe projects. Excel documents, for example, don't have this problem because they make a hidden temporary file, will notify another user it is read-only.

Adobe After Effects 2019 does not do this.

Yes. It should be over 445. If you have SSH access to the SNS system, try running "testparm -s" and see post what the smb.conf has (assuming that it's using Samba).
One step ahead of you. Unfortunately I don't, and they go to great lengths to lock you out with the SSH keys they have. I even tried taking the boot drive out, but it looks like they have measures in place to make the partition unreadable that way.

The SNS is pretty robust with the locking features, and I don't think all of it is done with Samba

Just got a packet capture done on the IP of the workstation trying to save the file. One save was successful (FreeNAS) and the other was not allowed (SNS). Will be submitting on Jira.
