I am using freenas 9.2.1.8 and trying to get email notifications set up. But when I try to send a test email to my Comcast email I get an error 8 host name nor server name provided. I am not sure what is needed to fix this as none of the boxes are empty. Any help is much appreciated!

Can you ping an address outside your network, ie. google.com, from your server. If not, check your default gateway and DNS entries on your FreeNAS server.

Are you sure the username is correct? Many times, it's the email address.

How do I go about pinging an address outside my network? Sorry I'm very new to Freenas and servers. And yes I'm sure the username is correct!

Go to shell - either from the menu tree inside FreeNAS or if you have a monitor/keyboard on the server, there's a link to the console setup menu.

At the prompt type: ping google.com (or ntp.org) - you should recieve a reply from an IP address, ...

If you don't receive a proper response, you probably have a problem with your gateway and DNS addresses. Refer to the FreeNAS documentation as to where to put these entries.

I tried pinging google.com and I got a response. So what then would be my problem?

can you post the output of the response or a picture - just so we know it's the correct response.

that's correct.

did you try changing the smtp port from 25 to 587 (or 465)? apparently comcast doesn't support port 25.

I tried both port 587 and 465 and I still get the same error. I can post a picture of the trot message if that will help?

Going back to the Comcast URL I furnished earlier, it looks like in addition to changing the SMTP port to 587, you need to change the encryption to TLS.

btw, you might also want to change the "from email" to be your comcast email address, just in case their antispam protection is looking at the address.

I changed the from to my comcast email and used the TLS encryption still no go!
