Hello all

I am by no means a network capable guy. I am very new to freenas and still learning how to use it. I am running 11.2 RC1. When i login the dashboard present itself, the band with shown is in downloads 0.0011 mbps and .0003MBps in uploads. I never seen it go much higher than this.

My setup is pretty vanilla and I am in the process of learning to install Emby (which now almost works) I have my NAS directly connected to my router. wwwwhat have not done?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

It is FreeNAS, an name.
I am running 11.2 RC1.
The RC1 is "Release Candidate 1", effectively still in development, so some features may not work.
my rig; asus m5 MB, Amd FX 630 6 core, 16GB ddr4 ECC ram, 4x2TB wd Red and 4X1TB Seagate Barracuda, Freenas 11.2 on a USB, all house connected via Giga powerline.
See that bit where you say, "all house connected via Giga powerline,"?? If I were to guess, I would say that your slow network connectivity is because of the network infrastructure.
The other problem is you don't identify exactly which Asus M5 system board you are using and they make several different ones. The ones I looked at use the, "Realtek® 8111E , 1 x Gigabit LAN Controller(s)", which are known to perform poorly with FreeBSD and FreeNAS. If you would have followed the guidance provided here BEFORE you built your system, you would have known that this in not the correct hardware to use.

Hardware Recommendations Guide Rev 1e) 2017-05-06
https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?resources/hardware-recommendations-guide.12/

Latest generation hardware is almost never the recommended hardware for FreeNAS as it takes time for drivers to be available, but Realtek has never supported FreeBSD well and probably never will.

thank you for our reply

as mentioned the server was connected directly to the main router . now i moved it to its permanent location and is connected via powerline with similar results. The rig was built as a nas4free box and was working fine. the only reason i migrated to freenas was thr emby plugin and the better development of the solution.

well i guess i am sol for the moment and i will need to migrate to a better platform. Thank you once again for your reply

You might be able to install a network card in an expansion slot, but I don't know the exact model of the system board you are using. Still, power line networking is an unknown to me. I wouldn't consider using it.

Could you recommend a card. would something like a intel broadcom or tp link be suitable?

Intel seems to be the NIC of choice for gigabit. Chelsio is the NIC of choice for 10G.

I don't know about either of those cards. I do know that things based on the Intel i350 chipset work very well. I quick eBay search on "intel i350" turned up quite a few at around $50 US. That would be my recommendation. Look in the "resources" section of the forum for the hardware reference guide. It gives you a good idea what works well.

hello in an effort to improve my network throughput of my nas, I have decided to take the plunge and go with a supermicro x10slm+f board wit 16gb ecc and an e3 1275 v3 cpu would you consider this a compatible board for freenas and if so, i believe i need to reinstall freenas on the new chassi. I just cannot just move the usb to the new chassi and boot from it?

Thank you

Yes, you just move the boot and storage drives to the new chassis. No need to reinstall. You will need to access the system from the console to reconfigure the IP address on the new Network Interface because that will be a difference.
