My FreeNAS install is up and running and powering the office - I notice that powerd and autotuning are disabled by default so presumably there is some disadvantage to having them on - why is this? Should I enable them?

Powerd should be fine. Autotune, no.

powerd, with appropriate settings, saves power while the CPU is not busy, but also enables Turbo mode on Intel processors and can improve performance on CPU-intensive jobs.

If turbo doesn't work without it, it seems like an important thing to turn it on.
Thanks.

Because autotune never really worked very well, in a nutshell.
