setting up freenas?

Hi I have just started getting used to FreeNas and I have 4 2 tb drives using raidz1 and ZFS

I have created the volume, however I would like my shares to point to specific locations I assume all i do is create a ZFS Dataset and point the shares to these? is that correct?

Yes, that is correct.
With FreeNAS 8.1 you'll be able to choose any directory under the volume.

thanks, so all datasets are still part of the volume so they will still be raided? when 8.1 comes out can i change it over easily to the method you mentioned??

also how do i know if a harddrive fails with raidz??
