My Issues:
1. I'm a newbie to freenas

2. I have been trying to setup permissions on a custom level in freenas 11 stable for 72 hours.

The Good: I have had partial success in that:
The only thing I've managed to figure out thus far is setup a non protected public share.

based upon the guide https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...-configure-share-permissions-freenas-9.35276/ provided

My Goal:
Is to setup up a home space for system users as needed using either NFS or CIFS along with a password protected public share.

In this public share i would like the ability to only allow certain users access to the certain folders within that share.

I truly appreciate any direction or help I can get in learning how to achieve this goal.

Not sure what is your exact problem because the solution is in the guide you quoted.
You can run step 7 on any directory to fine tune authorisation for it.

Also
  • Quite obvious I admit, but make sure "everyone" is not in authorisation list
  • What may happend is your windows get connected as anonymous at some point and still using this credential later. Restart your windows client and make sure it is asked a login when first connectiong to share.

1ST: I appreciate your response

2ND: I will generate a tutorial upon the many other thousand tutorials to help novices of this software understand how the permissions work when working under windows environment.

Though I do still need to learn how to use the nfs portion of this ware. as i desire a nfs/cifs split for universal purposes.

3RD: I now understand that i was approaching the permissions the wrong way. I was of the impression that the gui of freenas was how permissions were set in all environments so i was efficiently locking myself out of every folder and it perplexed the heck outta me. it was only when i seen a YouTube tutorial that explained how in windows you create a freenas user but leave the permissions to windows that I understood my error.

In all, this software makes file sharing easypeasy.

and yes i plan to get deep into learning this ware so i can start installing custom pkg and the like.
