I have 2 servers:
  • Server 1:
    • Old hardware
    • Dedicated hardware RAID card
    • 8 harddisks 3TB in RAID6
    • Windows 7
  • Server 2
    • ESXI5.5
    • Supermicro Mobo
    • 2 Xeon E52620 processors
    • 96 GB ECC RAM (16*6)
    • 1 harddisk to hold virtual machines
    • Flashed IBM software RAID card
    • 18 Harddisks 4TB each, 2 pools each 8HDD in Raidz2 and 1 hotspare
    • Intel NIC Card (4x1GbE)
    • Virtual machines are
      • Freenas (managing the 2 pools)
      • Windows 7 (Plex server etc..)
As you can see Server 2 is a much powerful machine but read speeds are horrible (around 1-2 Mbs!)
However writing to it uses the full speed (~125Mbs)

Server 1 has no problem writing or reading to it! it always runs at full speed... What might be the problem?
Transferring a file from Pool 1 to Pool 2 or vice-versa will also be extremely slow

Desperate for an answer here as well. I also get the same full write speeds, and horrid read speeds.

  1. How much RAM have you allocated to the Freenas VM?
  2. Is said RAM locked/reserved so Freenas always gets that amount?
  3. Have you provided the Freenas VM with enough CPU power?
  4. Have you set the CPU(s) to "high" for the VM?
  5. What type of share(s) are you using on Freenas (CIFS, NFS, iSCSI)?
  6. What kind of Read tests are you running?
  7. Do you have a SLOG?
  8. Do you have a L2ARC?
