I have 4x 4TB WD red drives in a TN server today, and it is embarrassingly beyond the need to be updated. Today, I run a few linux VMs, a half-dozen plugins, and a custom jail or two. The bulk of the work probably comes from Plex, though a single i3-3220 seems to get the job done today.

Supermicro seems to have a decent reputation here, and I'm looking at this: https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9siv18k7fy2727. Am I crazy for looking at older refurb units? The aforementioned link has:
  • 4 drive bays
  • 2x Intel Xeon E5-2630L (lower-ish 60W TDP)
  • 96GB DDR3 ECC
  • 600W Gold PS
Noise is a factor, as this will be sitting in the room next to me. I may look to swap the power supplies to the SQ line if they have the pressure differential necessary for the appropriate airflow. I'm not sure whether there is one for the CSE-815. Is there any advice against using a power supply from the SQ line if they do exist for 815s?

I'm open to better options, particularly if I can reuse my existing drives and it comes in the same ballpark cost. I realize there are price tags that go along with upgrades, so I'm also willing to listen to where I need to focus expenditures.

If I'm going about this all wrong, let me know. Apologies if I'm missing some obvious piece of information that would help this thread.

I have two such devices and would not recommend them for using next to someone. They are nice little boxes and quieter than I had expected. But I would still not want them sitting next to me all the time. And it is not only the PSU that makes the noise. So changing that will not make it a "silent" machine. Also, the CPUs are not ideal for SMB with their low frequency.

The location of that adverb was important. The room where the server will reside is next to me. In a room directly below me, actually, and there is an HVAC vent that seems to allow a little more noise through.

Check out the SC721TQ-250B for a quiet 4 bay chassis. See my signature for two possible configurations.
