From what I've read, it seems a Zil SLOG only need to be small, so, could a SATA DOM be used as a Zil SLOG?

If so, any which models would be best?

EDIT: Actually, I think I've realised why maybe it couldn't work, as you generally want some sort of capacitor to save writes?

Two reasons why this is a bad idea:

DOMs aren't made for performance. You'd obviously want a fast SSD for SLOG.
DOMs don't have power loss protection.

Thanks Ericloewe,

I've seen people put the Intel 3500 80GB in, and that has a 100 MB/s write speed, the SuperMicro 32 GB SSD-DM032-PHI writes at 145 MB/s, but its more expensive so I guess only wins on space and power consumption.
I've found a SATA DOM with a capacitor, but it was dog slow.

So conclusion, yeah at this stage no recommended idea, but you never know they might bring a fast capacitor version out.

The Intel SSDs maintain their write speeds better than most SSDs, they're designed for that. Most consumer SSDs carry an inflated write rating that is only realistic under ideal conditions.

That comparison is only one of many comparisons that should be made when using storage for a ZIL. Throughput is NOT the primary indicator though. But I can guarantee you any SATA DOM out there has only a very rudimentary controller compared to an SSD, so they'll almost universally never be a good choice for ZILs. :)
