Hello forum,

Have a question regarding security in FreeNAS. Hopefully someone else has come across this and has a few tips on setting this up correctly. I have been using FreeNAS basically in a single user environment for around 6/7 years with the odd connection from Windows (wife's laptop) so have never had to deal with multi-user interaction with the FreeNAS system. To make things easier I setup all my shares (except for a separate pool for VM's/ProxMox) using "Windows" security for everything, was just easier.

So, a few weeks ago I convince my missus to move to Mint. I then started to look at migrating all of my shares (movies, music, iso-images etc etc) back to native "Unix" security, with mixed results.....
  1. Using the "Permissions Type" option in "Storage" did not remove Windows ACL's, i.e. all files and folders still had the + symbol at the end.
  2. My wife's user account id has an ID number of 1000 on her laptop, and so does mine on my laptop, my user account on FreeNAS is 1000 so they match (same for the group ID), how does one handle (or need to ?) creating my wife's user account on FreeNAS with the same UID the same as on her laptop when mine is 1000 as well ?
One of the main reason I want to move over to Unix style permissions is that I want to setup automatic rsync "pulls" from the FreeNAS box for all Mint based systems in the house/home office (5 systems). Just seems to make more sense having security "Unix" style for this and not "Windows". For example, I found that manually running rsync "push" to FreeNAS just stops at certain files when Windows style ACL's are in place. I reset all files and folders on the destination manually using the setfacls command (because it wouldn't work from the FreeNAS GUI) and my rsync job runs.

Thanks in advance

What filesharing protocol are you using? If you're using samba (SMB/CIFS) then the dataset you're sharing should be set to 'windows' permissions type.

Try adding --no-p to the rsync command.

anados, thanks for the prompt reply.

I'm looking to move all current CIFS/SMB shares over the NFS.
