Safe to forward single port for OpenVPN?

Hey guys, quick question.

I'm interested in setting up OpenVPN in a jail to grant myself access to my LAN while away. I've read through guides on how to do so and have set up OpenVPN in the past. My question is this: what are the safety implications of forwarding a single port to a FreeNAS jail for this service?
