Hi all,

I'm weighing up my options for offsite backup from a freenas box I have using rsync.

Does anybody currently achieve this and if so how much and who are you using as your backup service?

I have 8TB potentially growing to around 12/14TB over 3 years and want a service that isn't going to cost the earth.

Sidestepping the issue of whether you're wanting to throw sensitive data into the cloud, have you checked out strongspace (https://www.strongspace.com/)?

That said, I don't see cloud backup being practical. Data lines are too slow, and monthly costs are too high. How long would it take you to download 10TB with your internet connection? You're going to get about 1TB/48hrs with 45Mbit, so, it's going to take you 480hrs (20 days) to restore your data, at 45Mbit (most of us don't have this, although you may if you're a small-medium sides business). This also doesn't address the issue of a cloud provider giving you 45Mbit for 20 days.

It would be cheaper (provided you want to think longer term than 3yrs) to buy a second system and simply mirror data once a week/month. You might also consider something like buying a second hand LTO tape library and backing up to tape. I know it has fallen out of the "cool circle", but it's still very reliable, and the cost/storage ratio isn't too bad. LTO5 is around 1.5T uncompressed and media is in the $50 range.

Thanks for that I will take a look at ss. We do indeed have a 50Mbit connection and I understand the time of restoring from backup would be long.

I am looking at this more from an ultimate disaster recovery scenario whereby the data is not sensitive nor crucial for day to day activity but in the long run would be a great loss. I have thrown about the idea of onsite replicated backup but it always comes back to that point "onsite". We want something easily manageable with no process overhead e.g. someone not having to change/take tapes home with them. And ultimately be resilient across fire/theft/water damage, an offsite solution seems to be the only real option.

Anyway I will take a look at strongspace and work out how much this would cost, may be able to get a trial with a smaller portion of data and see how it pans out.

If it was my data, I would sync it with an machine in (a different) colo/offsite. Its trivial to setup an IPSec tunnel between colo's and that would allow you to sync data at a much finer interval, and if something bad happened, you could (potentially) go to said colo, dupe the drives and come back with the data.

8.0.4 will feature rsync+ssh. It's up to you if you want to deal with IPSec, but rsync+ssh is good enough for most folks..

IPSec is an easy way to satisfy policy that all traffic between site A and site B is encrypted w/o having to worry about whether you need to encrypt protocol X and not Y. The bigger the operation, the more likely you will have to satisfy these kinds of policies (for example, companies bigger than 1000 people).

Yes, rsync+ssh would be sufficient for most.

Hurry up and get 8.0.4 out will ya?
