Currently using a QNap TS-421 as a NAS device. Being an older ARM device, compatibility, speed and expansion has become an issue. My only purpose for this system is as a media server. Storage, Emby, Sonarr, Couchpotato and Headphones. No need for transcoding as my boxes at each TV will play the files natively with no issues.

I do have some hardware around the house that I'd like to repurpose as a FreeNAS device and am wondering if anybody sees any compatibility issues aside from the obvious non-ECC ram support. Being only for media, and still using an online backup of all data, a crash would not be a life ending event.

Here's what I've got.
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Pro 4
CPU: Intel Core i5-3450 Ivy Bridge 3.1ghz LGA1155 Quad-Core
PSU: Rosewill RP600 600w
RAM: G Skill Ripjaw X 16Gb (2x 8Gb)
DRIVES: WD Red 4Tb (Current qty: x4, will expand to x8 with build)

Need to Buy:
FreeNAS Boot: SanDisk Cruzer Fit 16gb
Case Option 1: Fractal Design R5 Black
Case Option 2: NZXT Source 210 Black

I'm up in the air on which case to purchase for this. Both will hold the 8 drives I'm looking to run. The Fractal Design looks much sleeker than the NZXT but at roughly 3x the cost and may not really be necessary for a system that will be in the basement and almost never seen.

My main concerns are the compatibility of the 8x SATA connectors on the ASRock board, and the Realtek RTL8111E.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this setup?

If you go this route, disable the onboard Realtek NIC and buy an Intel Pro/1000 CT. It's about $30 USD

That's a simple addition.

I'm contemplating just buying an m1015 to avoid the possible headache. They're cheap enough on ebay and would leave me room to expand beyond 8 drives if ever needed
