Replication server question

At the end of the year I am considering building a replication server to store at my parent's house. This setup would employ ZFS replication.

Question: Does the replication server need to have identical sized storage or can it be smaller/larger as long as the capacity is not reached?

Does the replication server need to have identical sized storage

It doesn't even have to have the same pool layout or be running FreeNAS, it just has to run a compatible version of ZFS and be reachable via SSH using public-key authentication.
