I have setup FreeNas replication between two remote sites utilizing a PFSense router OpenVPN site to site connection. The connection seems to be good and I am pulling about 50 KBps when doing a download across the vpn. This seems appropriate for the pipe they have. They are doing about 600 MB of changes a day, with that connection speed, I expect my snapshots to traverse my pipe in about 2.5 hours. This is completely acceptable, even 10 hours would be acceptable if things got bad. My problem is that both the PFsense and the FreeNAS boxes are showing 700 Kbps transfer rate, which is about 90 KBps, but the replication has been running for 4 hours and is only at 10% for about 700 MB. I can't find anywhere why the bandwidth is showing as it is, but the actual replication is going so slow. Has anyone experienced something similar to this? I am running 9.2.1.6 on the remote host and 9.2.1.5 on my local box.

What is your CPU load on the pfsense box when doing replication? If you port-forward to the ssh server (no VPN) does performance improve? (Don't do this long-term of course).

Note that upgrading to 9.2.1.7 on both servers and enabling compression should also improve performance.
