Reclaiming disk space

Hi

I have been working with FreeNAS 9.1 successfully for several weeks.
I have just tried reclaiming disk space by deleting a number of unwanted files that total some 400gb.
Having deleted the files , I am puzzled that although the space used is now shown to be 400gb less than it was, the space available has not changed ie is not 400gb more than I had before I started.

At first I thought I had the recycle bin enabled but I had not, and of course the space used has reduced as it should so files are not in the bin. But why oh why has the space available not increased ?

Any suggestions gratefully received.
