Hi - I have a RAIDZ2 pool setup of 6x3T disks (WD Red), one disks started showing read errors and fails the short and long smart tests. I've contacted WD to RMA it but since it's the first time i'm experiencing this situation i wonder how should i proceed while i go through the RMA process.
My thinking is that I get the NAS offline for now, take the faulting disk out and once i get the new one from WD i'll plug it in and start the rebuild process (does it start automatically or do i need to trigger/prepare anything through GUI).
Do i need to take any special precautions otherwise?

I plan to follow the 1-4 steps of the latest FreeNAS docs (section 8.1.10: https://doc.freenas.org/11/storage.html#replacing-a-failed-drive), but if you have any extra suggestions how to prepare i'll gladly listen :)

Good, you saved me the first part of my answer.

When I get the new drive I would want to burn it - would follow the procedure described here https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?resources/hard-drive-burn-in-testing.92/ - the combination of SMART tests, badblocks and a final long SMART test - before considering bringing that drive into my pool.

Another reference on the procedure is in Uncle Fester's Guide

Good idea about the burn-in, especially since i've read that often the replacement drives are refurbished and sometimes can be DoA.

I got what appeared to be a brand new 4TB WD Red on an RMA about a month ago. Good luck!
