Yesterday I got my RMA'd drive back from Western Digital for my RAID Z2 array which consists of 5 6TB HDDs.

I put the new drive in, selected it as the replacement, and began resliver.

It ran overnight but this morning I have this in my logs

CRITICAL: March 30, 2017, 5:32 a.m. - Device: /dev/da4 [SAT], unable to open device

This was my replacement drive.

I look at my drives and see that I only see 4 of my 6TB drives listed, the new one is gone.

I look at my volume and it shows da4 as missing however the resliver process is at 85% and still climbing.

Did my RMA drive die and if so why would the resliver still be making progress?

SSH into your server and post the results of the command
# zpool status

It sounds as if you skipped testing of the new drive before
placing it in your machine, as a home user I make a practice
of performing a SMART conveyance test AND a Long Test on
any new drive before installing them. In a production setting
admins often run drives through a much more rigorous set
of tests and torture to weed out "infant mortality".

Yeah, no testing done on the RMA drive. If its dead, it's dead and I'll send it back to WD tomorrow.

The resliver is up to 96% now so we'll see soon if it magically comes back online.
