Don't install to a hard drive. Install on a thumb drive

If that is a question, then yes.

See section 1.4.3 of the manual. While it says "at least 2Gb", I'd go with 4Gb instead. But, you don't need anything larger.

And I will use the operating system from a thumb drive ?

Definitely 4 GB. I believe the image size is still planned to be increased.

I kind of wished they had just upped it to 4GB with the first 9.x release. That way you can have a solid psychological barrier. You want a whole new OS, you might need a whole new USB stick. I was a little disappointed to see that it was increased, then decreased back to the original size.

I know this is common knowledge, but I have to wonder, why is the OS always put on a USB drive? Is is read into RAM and only used occasionally to store the configuration, therefore having no impact on performance whatsoever? I always worry about the reliability of those little USB drives, especially the cheap ones, when used in constant read environments.

Yes.

And, in addition to that, it's very small ~2Gb [but do use a 4Gb drive, since some 2's are too small]. Even if you install a larger drive, the extra space isn't usable.

USB ports are generally more plentiful than SATA ports. Rather than wasting a SATA port for the OS, just use one of the USB ports.

Lastly, as long as you save your configuration file, should the flash drive die, all you need to do is reinstall the OS and restore your config. I have a cron job that backs up my configuration file daily.

Hi,

Coming in late but this is what we will run FreeNAS off of;

http://www.emphase.com/sata-flash-m...s1/sata-flash-module-s1-industrial-grade-245/

We've run these things before for similar embedded approach.

Removes any possibility of some one removing a USB key by accident or on purpose etc.

Plus these things are pretty industrial grade, perfect for the FreeNAS approach.

Now if its a lack of SATA ports on your mobo, then perhaps a PATA version would due;

Again, keeping with the embedded theme of FreeNAS (a waste to take up a hot plug port etc, SSD or a HDD) and keep secure and reliable.

Just my 2 cents.
