questions about moving hard drives

hello all. i am planning a build for a nas and i'm considering using freenas with zfs. the motherboard i will be using has 4 sata ports on it. i am planning on getting a hba controller in the future, i think i have access to a dell sas 6ir that i can flash. can i go on and set up freenas using 3 hard drives connected to the motherboard then later move them to the hba controller? is this even possible?

You're talking about just moving the 3 drives over to a controller card once you get the card? Sure. FreeNAS may just pick up on the drives and start using them again automagically. If it doesn't, you'll use the auto import feature and you'll be running again in no time.
