I have had a lot of learning experince with setting up and running FreeNAS on my home server. However, I believe it is time to realize it is much more than I need in terms of storage security and lacking some other things I would like to install on the OS.

I have decided to move to Ubuntu server and I have a question that I was hoping to get an answer to. I currently only have one Zpool (RaidZ Mirror 2 x 2TB). Is it possible, since its a mirror, to just wipe one of the drives and install Ubuntu Server on the other and have the data intact? Or do I need to migrate my DB's and media to external media first?

Thanks for the help!

Unless you claim to have the data backup elsewhere, I think this would be best before migrating to a new operating system.
IMHO

Can a freenas pool even be imported on Linux? I'm not sure they have the same supported feature flags.

I have read reports of people having no major issues. No idea, though, because I don't see any reason to leave FreeNAS (at least not until they screw up my CIFS setup)

I am also contemplating moving from FreeNAS to Ubuntu Server. However, I would still want to boot from USB, run the OS from RAM, and still have configuration persisted to the USB. The problem is I have no idea how to do that, so the plan is on hold for the moment.

I am thinking about doing the same thing. I will attempt this, this week with another flash drive that I have and I will report back with my success/failure.
