I want to install FreeNAS 8.x to a pair of small mirrored ZFS volumes. NOT to usb stick(s).

Could swear I saw a tutotial on this before. But been searching for 30 mins now and cannot locate it again.

Could someone point me to the specific info on how to do this?

Thanks.

RE: You can't

Pity. Mirrored ZFS boot volumes are a recommended best practice. Missing out on good stuff there. Until this is an option I'll just go back to using Nexenta or EON, which are also freely available and do support this.

RE: Stop trying to...

No. I don't need your permission or approval to ask if/how something can be done. Pretty arrogant of you to try and tell me how I should think. If you knew/understood anything about the history of OSS you'd realize how counter intuitive and self destructive that narrow view actually is.

RE: Questions being repeated...

If that were true my search would have turned it up. And if it does exist and I missed it, you should have linked the information your reply, as I asked. That would have actually been useful.

Since I'm sure you do not represent the community as a whole I will wait patiently for a response from someone else, hopefully with a bit more class and social skill. In the meantime...you, sir, should be quiet and let the adults talk before you drive another new user away from trying/recommending/contributing to FreeNAS.

And this thread has been copied so if you abuse your moderator privileges that will only come back to make you look even more foolish. So how about being helpful instead, hm?

Well, you cant. :p At least not install it. It would have to be done manually. FYI, FreeBSD also boots raidz pools.

Perhaps you are thinking of this, [thread=1432]FreeNAS root on ZFS[/thread]. It appears to be a bit sparse on details.

YES! That's it.

Thank you so much. I knew I saw that somewhere.

Now, there's another link related to this that I saved at work that talks about booting FreeBSD from ZFS that had some more info. Getting on the right track methinks. :D

It *won't* work.....

ZFS drivers are not loaded until AFTER FreeNAS boots.... Yes, FreeBSD may be able to do it, but FreeNAS/nanobsd is not the same.

Of course you're welcome to try, someone telling me its not possible never stopped me ;)

It would be 200% easier to gmirror them, instead of ZFS mirror it, which IMHO is a waste of resources for the flash drive.

I did it once but I don't remember the details...

it was something like:

sysctl kern.geom.debugflags=0x10
gmirror label gm0 ada0
reboot
gmirror insert gm0 ada1
