Does anyone have any recommendations for soak/burn testing disks before deciding if they become part of a pool? Preferably at least a single pass to get the drive to mark/remap any bad sectors before ZFS sees it? Obviously looking at S.M.A.R.T. as well during the test.

I was hoping for something a bit better than dd and a bit of free-form scripting... :p But yes, I did read that sticky.

Oooh, badblocks. Hello old friend! Thanks for that, I really should spend some quality time spelunking through the FreeNAS image to see what's there.
