What is the easiest way to force some CPU/system load on my NAS to check the hardware, without making any permanent changes or anything? I have a suspicion that it may be rebooting when being under a high load, and not due to any high temps. Just want to test this and see if I can figure out the issue before ordering new hardware.

Prime95 is a very good CPU stress test. The version for FreeBSD 10.0 (p95v287.FreeBSD10-64.tar.gz) can be run directly in FreeNAS 9.10 after downloading and unpacking (best would be to use a distinct folder). It's a tool with a command line interface, shell usage is required.

After starting, choose the options
15. Options/Torture Test
2 = In-place large FFTs (maximum heat and power consumption, some RAM tested)
for the first stress test. After your stress tests are done you can simply delete the folder with all the Prime95 stuff.
