I gave him a link to a page with screenshots showing that information and telling him he needed an "app password" since he's using 2FA, but still hasn't tried that. Maybe he'll listen to you, since you're a moderator. ;-)

I send mail to "smtp.gmail.com" port 465 with SSL enabled using SMTP auth.

Heh...I figured it out because gmail spit back an error pointing to a link with instructions detailing exactly what to do.

It's cheap & easy to try!

Here is what I tried to set up, when I tried to send the e-mail nothing happened no error and n e-mail received.

Console messages:
Root E-mail: me@gmail.com
From email:
root@freenas.local
Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com
Port to connect to: 465
TLS/SSL: SSL
Use SMTP Authentication:
Username:
me@gmail.com
Password: (Generated Password)

Password confirmation: (Generated Password)

For the from email address, use your me@gmail.com

this is really hard to follow, since this discussion is going on in two parallel threads.

I apologize again for the other thread and have tried to link it back to this one.
I am not sure what I can do, I do not believe that I can cancel or terminate the other thread.
If you have an idea please let me know, and thank you for your assistance.

Did you change the "From email: root@freenas.local" to me@gmail.com (substituting your prefix) in the gmail account.

Did your Internet connection come back up? If not, wait until it's up, before you test it again.

Did you not get the notice that I MERGED your other thread into this one? They are one in the same now.

You are going to need to show me how that is done. I'll drop a message in the Staff forum section later.

I have been working on this again without success.
My ISP has SMTP servers however based on memory I do not use them. What I did was sign of for a Gmail account and went from there.
Just a note I have now changed my account back to a POP3 account on Gmail as per an earlier ewcommendation.
With Gmail I am set up for the 2step verification.
Here is some results that I saved when trying several of my ISP's SMTP servers.

Your test email could not be sent: (452, '4.5.2 Could not resolve sender domain.', u'root@freenas.local')
From email: root@freenas.local
Outgoing mail server: relay2.cat.net.th
Port to connect to: 25
TLS/SSL: Plain
Use SMTP Authentication:
Username:
Password:
Password confirmation:
Follow my steps here for 2-step authentication. https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?posts/134290

Hello All;
I finally was able to get the e-mail service to run and send a test e-mail to my Gmail account !
For anyone having a problem like me here is what you can use to get it to work:

From email: root@freenas.local
Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com
Port to connect to: 465
TLS/SSL: SSL
Use SMTP Authentication: (Tick Box)
Username: Just name of e-mail account no @gmail.com
Password: Use the two step verification code given by Gmail
Password confirmation: Use the two step verification code given by Gmail

That is what is needed for a Gmail account, I hope that this will help others as it was a very painful experience for me.
