Hi everyone

I have been using FreeNas for almost a month now and have twice had the Time Machine error "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you."

The first time I had it I thought it was a fluke so I connected up a gigabit lan connection and off I went to do another backup. But this time I thought I better research it a bit further.

I found a post: http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,...ine-sparsebundle-nas-based-backup-errors.html about how to fix it, which seems pretty intense, but I would like to know what other people have done to prevent this error.

I was hoping to put freenas into some of my apple based clients workplaces for Time Machine but if it is going to do this every few weeks then that probably is not an option.

I also searched the forum but couldn't find anything - surely I'm not the only one!

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem on two macs (both Lion) backing up to FreeNAS. I had it occasionally with my Time Capsule too, but it seems much more frequent now.

Yup I'm running 10.7.3 also. I only have one mac backing up to the nas though so I could not confirm if this was happening on multiple systems.

I found a helpful thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3658856?start=0&tstart=0

Read the whole thread and pay attention to hoppah who comes to a conclusion at the end that the raid scrubbing is causing the problem.

I also started another thread about disabling the scrubbing here: http://forums.freenas.org/showthread.php?7023-Disabling-ZFS-Scheduled-Scrubbing

I am going to use the time machine scheduler app to make my time machine only backup probably once a day and see how that goes. that app can be found here: http://www.klieme.com/TimeMachineScheduler.html

I also need to find out exactly what time the nas scrubs so we can avoid it with the scheduler.

Any updates on this? I'm getting the same message and would love to resolve it.

Opinions on the cause have varied over the years, this one does not figure much nowadays - why not start a new thread with details of your FreeNAS installation, including the details of the shares you are using for Time Machine, and the Mac(s)? There may not be an obvious cure but, depending on the problem you have, there may be things people can suggest to help.
