Hello,

I am going to be building a FreeNAS box in the next week or so to replace my current Windows 8.1 Storage Spaces solution I'm currently using. I have done a lot of research, read most of the manual (skipped some chapters that wouldn't apply to my use), read through Cyberjock's powerpoint, and read a lot of forum posts. I would just like to commit my plan to writing and ask for any feedback the pros in this forum might be able to give, thank you in advance!

My NAS storage will be used for the following:
  • Media Storage *Main reason for NAS to exist
  • Time Machine Backups
  • General Storage/Use
  • < 100GB of important data that will be backed up off site
Other uses for the machine:
  • Plex Media Server
  • Couchpotato/ Sonarr
  • Sabnzbd/Transmission
Here is what I have picked up for the hardware:

RAM: 16 GB ECC RAM
MB + CPU: X9SCM-F & Intel Xeon E3-1220v2
Case: NZXT Source 220
PSU: Seasonic G Series SSR-550RM
Drives: 2x 4TB HGST Deskstar NAS
OS: Sandisk Cruzer Fit 8GB

I am having second thoughts on the MB/CPU combo I picked up, I know that it is used, which I suppose carries some risk. Would that be a huge no-no? Is my data in any danger in a CPU/MB failure situation?

My plan for the storage is to do a striped volume of mirrored vdevs.

After I build and configure the FreeNAS box I plan to migrate my data to it from the Windows machine and then harvest the drives out of it to add to the FreeNAS box. I have about 3TB of data right now on the Windows machine.

The drives in the Windows box are:

2x WD Blue 1TB
1x WD Green 2TB
1x WD Blue 2TB

I know... not the best drives for a NAS, but it feels like a lot of storage space to just throw away. I should mention that none of these drives are over 1 year old. My plan would be to add to my existing volume two more mirrors so my eventual volume would consist of 3 vdevs each having a dual mirror.

Questions:

  1. Is using the second hand MB/CPU dangerous?
  2. Is using these older HDDs dangerous?
  3. What UPS would you recommend for this system?
Any other feedback or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time!

as long as you do some testing of the system there should be no problems with loosing data.
you should test the hdd as well. if they pass there should be no problems.

my ups - CyberPower CP685AVRG (390w UPS)
