Hello everyone,

I recently experienced a couple power outages and now TrueNAS won't start. I'm greeted with the below message when it boots up.

Does this look like a hardware issue? How do I go about recovering from this?

Corrupt boot media. Reinstall TrueNAS and a backup of your configuration. If you don't have a backup conf, you may be able to recover one from the old system.

A UPS is not strictly required for TrueNAS, and a corrupted boot device can just as easily show up after a controlled power-off.

Your configuration is automatically backed up to the system dataset [1] (which is migrated to your first created pool) - you may be able to recover it from there if you had a complex configuration, but you should be able to reinstall and choose "Import Pool" as a first step.

Funny enough, I do have a UPS. But for whatever reason it doesn't work right..... It shut off immediately without giving it time to properly shut down. *sigh*

Something I need to look into.

Corrupt boot media. Reinstall TrueNAS and a backup of your configuration. If you don't have a backup conf, you may be able to recover one from the old system.
I had an SSD attached at the time of the outage that won't boot at all, as in, it doesn't post anything, just a blank screen when it's supposed to be loading.

This is when I stick in an old USB boot drive that wasn't plugged in at the time of the loss of power.

I want to tell you that you were absolutely right.

I reinstalled TrueNAS and imported my configuration. Voila it works again!

Thank you everyone for your responses!

It shut off immediately

How "immediately"? Like the power went out and the UPS load dropped in a few seconds? If so, you might need a battery replacement. Some UPS's have poor battery failure detection. It is also worth using something like a Kill-a-watt to make sure you're not drawing too much power from the UPS. I get nervous when pulling more than maybe 50% of rated current from a UPS.

Yeah, I think it drops out immediately.

When the power comes back on the UPS never restarts, it just beeps until I shut it down and turn it back on.

The UPS I have is the model listed below.
