Anyone know if it's possible to reset the jail id increment count back to zero?

Apparently some code was committed several years ago that kept jail numbers from incrementing to ridiculous numbers http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=122270

I was unable to find out where the operating system stores the increment count however.

It's stored in a sysctl variable, however, there is a way to set it so it stays the same in rc.conf. I opened a ticket to add this as a feature awhile back and I thought it had be implemented, but it hasn't. I don't recall the ticket number, but you could do a search at support.freenas.org and add a +1.

The way jails are currently implemented, making changes in rc.conf doesn't work because the settings are generated from the freenas database. :(

I'll update this post with the ticket # if I find it.

Edit, I can't find the ticket, but I did find this commit message:

https://support.freenas.org/changeset/11836

It looks like they had problems implementing it for some reason. I don't know why because I was able to set it from the rc.conf prior to the plugin jail officially being added and it would stay set at "1".

It looks like this might be another vnet/vimage related thing like mounting NFS shares inside a jail. I haven't found anything specific at the moment, just a hunch.

Besides rebooting I assume? I don't know of a way. Why are you starting and stopping the jail all the time anyway?

I remember thinking the same thing at the time, but I don't remember why anymore.
