I'm trying (or would like to try to) build a FreeNAS storage appliance with a Linux Kernel so that I can also integrate cubeSQL.

Any ideas? Is this possible with FreeNAS or am I simply just not knowledgeable enough with how FreeNAS uses the BSD OS & Kernel?

Thanks

Hi winstontj,

I'm not going to say you can't do this, but really, you can't do this.....

I spent some time on Google before I posted that question and it looked like a few people have tried (who knows if successful or not). Just wasn't sure if the source code would need to be completely re-written or if there was an easy way to do it.

I want to build a storage appliance that has cubeSQL embedded as well so it can serve files out. My choice is either get cubeSQL to work on BSD or get FreeNAS to work on Linux.

It's not always great to merge 2 appliances. ZFS is not synonymous with FreeNAS. FreeNAS supports ZFS, and so does FreeBSD, but they aren't the only way to get ZFS RAID. Take a look at http://zfsonlinux.org/ for instance. If it works well (I didn't dive into researching that), it won't be a pure NAS (and certainly not FreeNAS 8), but it will give you ZFS RAID protection on your Linux-based cubeSQL appliance. And isn't that what you most care about?
