Plex server

When I ran debian and setup a Plex server, it quit working because they wanted money for the home server.

Is that the case here? Wanting a monthly fee to run a local home server?

Running the Plex server is free (and it's that way under Linux, Mac, and Windows as well--you've never had to pay to use the Plex server). Using the Plex Pass features does require a Plex Pass subscription, which requires a fee. I paid for a lifetime subscription a while back, but you can pay by the month or by the year as well. But those are extra "bonus" features, not a requirement to use the server.

Weird. Under debian, all I was doing was exporting my music to the roku box and it kept giving me pop-up massages whining about needing a subscription
