pkg update fails

Vert new to FreeNAS. Just installed on an HP ProLiant Gen 8 - quite a job. Now I find that the 'pkg update' command fails. Help appreciated:

This is by design as FreeNAS is an appliance that won't let you update the base software (outside of its own Update system). If you want to install additional software to enhance the base install, use Plugins or Jails.

Take a look through the documentation, it explains a lot of the functions of FreeNAS.

This being said, if you do want to install things, e.g., from pkg or ports, you can do so in your own jails.
