Pitching in to help with a community plugin

So I was going to use the MotionEye plugin to make this simple but noticed it is still on 11.3-RELEASE per the .json for the community plugin.

Is there a way to help maintain or some community protocol for helping keep a plug in up to date?

I checked the TrueNAS documentation but only found one item with the search function which was applicable. Even if there is no formal method for community effort in updating plugins, I'm sure that if you succeeded with getting any plugin to be functional, the information and testing involved would be appreciated. As for how this might be submitted, perhaps a link to a github or similar vcs site might make it easy, but surely TrueNAS devs like @Kris Moore would know for sure.

I've got some vacation next week and I was hoping to make this a project to put some time into. Any direction on how to civilly and in a well mannered fashion contribute?

I don't want to go all cowboy and make a mess.

I've made my complete own development plugin repository for JailMan, so I think i'm you... well... "man" in this case...
The documentation actually does exist for the most part, those are just normal iocage plugins, so you need to check the iocage documentation instead.

Anyway:
To find the right steps to execute, TrueNAS checks the json files in this repo.
If there is a branch with the version you are running, it's going to use the json from said branch.
In you case ( I think) either:
12.1-RELEASE
or
12.2-RELEASE

If there is not, it will use "master" afaik.

To enable a certain plugin to work on a certain release you:
1. You create a PR to change the release in the JSON on branch "master" to the latest supported release
2. You create a PR to change the release in the JSON on the release branch(es)

That being said:
You still need to manually test if said plugin is actually working on said release, before altering the supported versions!

I've looked into "MotionEye" for you.
It looks like the plugin was created in september and just isn't maintained, so they also didn't submit verification it works on the latest versions (by updating the release in the json).

I've looked at the plugin code and I don't think there is anything in the plugin code that is inherently incompatible with 12, 12.1 or 12.2.
So you might be in luck just updating the release :D

You should be able to force an install with:
iocage fetch -g "https://github.com/ix-plugin-hub/iocage-plugin-index" -P "motioneye" -n "motioneye" -r "12.1-RELEASE " dhcp="on" vnet="on" allow_raw_sockets="1" boot="on"

If that doesn't work you can also manually install a plugin straight from the json by force.

Thanks I'll give this a try during my week off.

Is the bug that deletes multiple jails if they have the same name still an issue? I'd like to test with a fresh jail but I don't want to kill my prod jail.

So I tried your command but using 12.2-RELEASE as the version. The new plug in (named testeye) accepted cameras and seems to work.

However, when I get into that jail console and run 'freebsd-version' it reports the jail being 11.3-RELEASE-p14 (as does the TrueNAS GUI) even though the creation steps indicated it would use 12.2-RELEASE (of which I have several other jails running that version)

This makes me think I'll have to try again another evening using the brute force json method to test compatibility with 12.2-RELEASE.

Thank you for the help !

Ahh, I know whats going wrong:
with -r "12.2-RELEASE" it's looking up the 12.2-RELEASE branch, which lists "11.3-RELEASE" as the release to install.
The JSON should never be included in the 12.2-RELEASE branch imho, as it does not suppoer 12.2-RELEASE.

Direcly building from JSON should work fine though, just change the release.

I do have a question about the versioning. When I do 'uname -a' to find the version the jail does report that it is on 12.2_RELEASE is there a bug with freebsd-version in TrueNAS?

Whoot you are right!
"FreeBSD 12.2-RELEASE-p2 663e6b09467(HEAD) TRUENAS"

You don't actually seem to be running 11.3... If both the motd and uname -a worked out I expect you are actually on 12.2 and not 11.3
(which means: lucky you, your test of the plugin on 12.2-RELEASE worked)

So I made one manually with a json edited to change to 12.2 release.

And I'm able to add a camera, have it detect motion, and capture images when motion is detected. I suspect this meets a definition of success that matches the current plug in.

Awesome!
Be sure to file a pullrequest for both master and all release branches (and be sure to adapt the release version to every release branch)

Well, I can do that for the releases I test but I don't have every version of TrueNAS available to me to test with.

You can pretty safely add it to 12.1 and 12.0 if you tested 11.3 and 12.2.
I verified the code for you before... There is nothing special in it that got destroyed in those versions :)

Since I couldn't find any tests to perform or guidance on what validation is needed I feel like I'm walking blind around here.

If assuming this is to the community standard then I'll be happy to update the other branch jsons and submit the pull.
