Hi,

Does FreeNas support OVA files when building a VM? I'm trying to get Graylog running but not having much luck.

Thanks.

AFAIK the only currently supported method (at least until VM support is feature-complete in 11.1) is this (from the Guide):

Note: VMs from other virtual machine systems can be recreated for use in FreeNAS®. Back up the original VM, then create a new FreeNAS® VM with virtual hardware as close as possible to the original VM. Binary-copy the disk image data into the zvol created for the FreeNAS® VM with a tool that operates at the level of disk blocks, like dd(1). For some VM systems, it is best to back up data, install the operating system from scratch in a new FreeNAS® VM, and restore the data into the new VM.

This is good to know, ill be curious if the OVA import will be allowed in the 11.1 edition, i have been considering deploying a VMware VSAN Witness Appliance on the Freenas Box so that i can have it on an isolated zone/system...

That way i can have 2 ESXi Boxes with All Flash VSAN and the Witness in the FreeNAS box.

Does anyone know if this is possible yet? I found an OVA I wanted to work with last night and in the interest of not wasting time,.... Ididn't even try FreeNAS and went straight to ESXi .

I'm going to guess it's not, but it's worth asking?

Late reply:
I found an OVA of HassOS (Home Assistant / Hass.IO) and I ended up having to import it into VirtualBox on Ubuntu, then conver the disk image to raw, somehow, I think then DD the raw img back into a zvol.

I followed some instructions here and there and figured it out - it's a little overly complicated for basic users, I must say.
