There has been one checksum error...what are you looking at ?

Then dont replace the drive leave it in. That warning means you have a failed drive. The device
gptid/00e8c78a-3123-11e8-adc8-d0509946c62a ONLINE 0 0 1 has the checksum error which is
gptid/00e8c78a-3123-11e8-adc8-d0509946c62a N/A ada3p2
or the smartctl -a /dev/ada3 you ran SMART data on. The system is telling you to replace the drive.

It doesn't look like you have periodic SMART tests being run. Start daily short and weekly long SMART tests.

At the very least watch that drive, if it's on the way out it would make sense to get a cold spare tested/burned in ready to go on the shelf.

Thanks for your replies!

So can someone fill in on what I should be looking at for drives like these to be able to understand if it's failing or not?

Pending sectors is one, and run long SMART tests ( I do 2 weekly) and short SMART tests (I do these daily).

I would run a short then long SMART test on that drive now

ZFS found and fixed the single checksum error that was on the vdev, at the moment it's not a problem but watch it and do SMART tests

And look for?
to see if the long test fails on any blocks

I'm not a SMART guru so I'll make no clames about how far from failing a drive is, but with only 1.5 years of running it may still be in warranty?

I've always had horrible luck with seagate drives in my FreeNas server. Pretty much don't use them anymore. Could just be the system they're in or how Im using them, but I only ever use WD Red drives anymore.
