I have a Dell R510 running 9.10 with a H200 raid controller in it. I'm planning on reflashing (currently has firmware 7.x and freenas wants 20.x?), but I've already got everything iscsi exported to vmware ESXi.

I've got all the files downloaded to the boot drive (flash). Do I need to boot into single usermode or is it possible to unmount zfs volume so i can mess with the H200 card without hosing the volume? Oh H200 is in JBOD mode btw.

The 510 is headless / keyboardless and i'm having issues with the drac so i'd rather do it with the system running but if need be i'll throw the monitor and keyboard on it.

Storage:
R510
2 x low power xeon (completely forgot model)
8 x 2TB SAS NL (don't have drive model numbers, some seagate branded dell HDs)
128GB ECC ram
2 x 10 GBE <- iscsi is here because I lot putting 10gig nics in pci 4x slots.
Booting off USB flash

Compute:
R620
2x xeon (i should know this, just don't have access)
256GB ECC ram
2 x 10 GBE <- iscsi here
Booting off USB flash

Ok, I must have missed that. I looked all over the storage section and it wasn't obvious to me. I'm not in front of the box. Can you navigate me to it so i can properly curse once i get home?

If you detach, you will need to recreate an share, snapshots, and replication tasks. Most folks just reboot into UEFI or another bootable media to do the flash. Or shutdown and pull the data cables from the adapter.

I stand corrected on the shares.

Actually, I should say that I know it will ask about the shares (I've seen it do that), but I haven't seen it ask about snapshots and replication tasks, as I haven't had those set up on pools I've had occasion to detach. Testing on a VM is good. Or you could download the config first, and if something gets lost, re-upload it after re-importing the pool.

Well this is all fine and dandy. I took the yank hard drives advice over the create a bootable advice disk and seem to have bricked my H200 card. I've found a few docs on using megarec and a few other things to unbrick. Fun stuff! I think what happened was when i put dell branded 07 firmware via sasflash (native freenas) the box kernel paniced and rebooted at that section where all the docs say don't reboot yet or else.

Huray!

Woot Woot I say! Woot!

So quote Altered Beast - Rise from your grave and rescue my NAS!

So.. I used all the files from this url Crossflashing Dell PERC H200 to LSI 9211-8i

Created a FreeDOS boot disk via rofus (thanks for that pointer). Booted off usb and was ready for action. Well i was surprised by 8.3 filenames but it was doable.

I used the P07 sas2flash to erase the flash (-o -e 6).

Then i reloaded the dell firmware and bios using the P07 sas2flash. Note i did not use the Dell sas2flash.

Everything went fine!

then reflashed with P07 firmware and bios again using P07 sas2flash

Then did the P20.

I don't know what role the P20 uefi BSD files have but i ran that through sas2flash -b and it seemed happy.

Next problem was my Dell R510 got upset about the raid card no longer showing up as a H200 and threw some error about this is a NAS device system halted. I remember seeing somewhere that you have to move the card to a different slot but i found a work around. I just disabled the bootable option in the H200..err..LSI card and then booted of usb like normal.

Everything is back to working and damn.. WAY faster disk access. The disks would max out at 6 m/sec. Now i'm seeing a max of 37m/sec!

Seems firmware version 20 is a very worthy upgrade.

to be clear i used the sas2flash that came with the P20 firmware to do the P20 firmware upgrade.
