Off Site Backup - Best Way

I have a Dell Poweredge R720xd storage server running TrueNAS Core. I plan to build a second similar system that would be installed remotely at my son's house. I would use that system to backup my system and visa versa.

I am looking for a secure and low hassle way to set this up. I would do the first backup with the systems side by side. From then on I would like to have incremental backups as needed when something changes.

I think my challenges will be getting a good incremental backup working and getting a connection working between the two servers through the two ISP's.

I have time to educate myself before I build the next server.

I would appreciate any suggestions on resources that would get me started on the two issues of connectivity and backup systems.

Best Regards

You've got the right idea.

FreeNAS replication is straightforward to set up and manage. As I'm replicating between FreeNAS servers, I can't confirm though how successful replication is between TrueNAS CORE servers.

Between the two sites you'll need an encrypted connection. Personally, I use a VPN connection using FRITZ!Box routers.

The main stumbling block that I can see is with the ISPs. If you end up in a double-NAT dilemma at either or both ends (for example, an ISP provides a Carrier Grade NAT service), in the worst case, you may be up for 2 x the recurrent cost of external static IPs for your edge routers. More information in the Common Problems section of this Plex support article Troubleshooting Remote Access.

hello
maybe another good think is

read

and do a try with/betwen 2 TN Core with wireguard (eventualy 1 TN Core on a VirtualMachine on a remote location)
I make some step in that direction FreeNAS => to my windows machine (not with jail !) and working
I do not have time to try FreeNAS remote site => my local TN Core (test machine)
I fallow just copy/paste instruction on resources and change them for my situation
success

This is the kind of stuff I need. I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can before suffering through the normal frustrations of making it work. The Plex server troubleshooting info looks promising and your "Book Shelf" is amazing. Thank you very much!

Thank you Dan, Wireguard looks promising.
