Welcome to the forum!

FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD, so checking your mystery PC against the FreeBSD compatible hardware list may help you determine whether or not it has any chance of running successfully. Sounds as though there may be a problem with your network card... But without knowing more about your hardware, we can't possibly know. Tell us your hardware specifications, per the forum guidelines, and folks here will be more inclined to help out.

FreeNAS really needs entry-level server-class hardware to be effective, but unfortunately there is a lot of bad advice on the internet about using an old PC to create a NAS with FreeNAS: I get over 840,000 hits when I search for 'old pc nas'.

Good luck!

Both of those systems are woefully inadequate for FreeNAS.
