Hi everyone; I'm looking for a little guidance on how freenas might help me out with a few systems needs.

I've been reading on freenas for a few months. I set up virtual test instance, and I liked it. Now I'm trying to determine where freenas will help me out the most. I consider myself a humble tech-head and am ready to listen.

I seek solutions to 3 different problems (in no order). First, a better backup repository. Frenas caught my eye because of snapshots and dedupe. This might make it possible to have a fast alternative to tape libraries. Second, as an external storage system to attach to my enterprise SAN. (It's able to virtualize external storage). This gets me another tier of storage without investing super bucks into the name-brand vendor. Third (and most interesting me), a way to get some high IO and Bandwith connectivity to a few virtualized databases servers. (Off the cuff, it appears that I can implement striped SSDs and retain trim, while still leveraging my ESXi instance).

I have a suspicion that my first request is risky, second one is lame, and last one is way to hard.

Looking forward to some opinions; Thank you very much!
