Clean install performed on a usb. Booted to console menu, 0.0.0.0 assigned as the IP address. I assume this has to do with the NIC not being compatible corrrect? Windows 7 used to run on the machine and the ip was assigned without a hitch. Again I assume it's the NIC card not being compatible with FreeNAS?

May or may not be. You know the forum rules you said you read when you signed up yesterday? The same ones that are linked in red at the top of every page on this forum? You might want to take a look at them, especially the part where it says that hardware specs and FreeNAS version are pretty much essential for troubleshooting-related questions.

My sincerest apologies to those I have offended who have centered their lives around the foundation of rules. Didn't realize the forum rules were so enforced. Got what I needed tho so much thanks.

Now, if you're done with your tantrum, stop and think about this for a few minutes. You suspected that your issue was one of hardware compatibility. You posted asking if this was the case. Didn't it enter into your head for a moment that it might be somewhat relevant to actually list your hardware? Particularly since gpsguy already suggested that in the other thread you posted to? Sure, I (or he, or anyone else) can say "yep, incompatible NIC is likely", but your question wasn't what the likely cause was. To know if an incompatible NIC was the cause of your not getting an IP address, we need to know if the NIC is compatible, and for that, we need to know what the NIC is, and what version of FreeNAS you're using. How could you expect to get a useful answer without that information?

The purpose of the rules is not to enforce arbitrary hoops that users must jump through before they can receive help (it's not like you're being asked to do the Hokey Pokey and turn yourself around, after all, or to sacrifice a goat to your server); it's to save everyone's time (including yours) and get the most accurate answers possible, as quickly as possible. If you figure that you're special and shouldn't have to read or follow them, I guess that's up to you--but you'll be greatly reducing your chances of getting timely, accurate answers.

And as a moderator, I should have simply deleted the thread when the first post was made without the forum rules. It's a waste of everyone's time to throw out a "my car won't start" thread and provide zero information to help determine the problem.

The sacrifice of an old, unusable hard drive to Cthulhu, Ruler of the Great Bit Bucket in the Sky, is strictly optional, but recommended.

In the other thread I mentioned getting the well known Intel NIC.

But I also suggested he start his own thread and supply the hardware details. Since his comment was ... It works in Windows ...

my concern was/is that he has other potential problems that he hasn't seen yet, but we could point out, before one trips him up.
