Hey guys,

I'm having an issues getting FreeNAS to pick up the network interface in on a Gigabyte GA-H77M-D3H. I've installed FreeNAS onto a USB stick and once it's booted up, it goes to the console and instead of giving me an IP address, it says "No configured interfaces were found. Try to do it manually".

The chipset is an Atheros GbE LAN. I've searched high and low for a solution but cant seem to find anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers.

From the initial setup menu, select "9) Shell" and type "ifconfig". Post that output here.

That definitely did not find any interfaces...

If you type "dmesg" from the same prompt, does it have any probe lines for the Ethernet?

If i "dmesg | grep -i network", i get:
Code:
WARNING: VIMAGE (virtualised network stack) is a highly experimental feature.
pci2: <network, ethernet> at device 0.0 (no driver attached)

Definitely no driver for that device. You could try booting into 9.1-BETA to see if it was added in FreeBSD 9.1.

Does that mean i need a pci/pci-e NIC? Any recommendations on cards that work? Is there any way of injecting drivers into FreeNAS?

Hi galaxy,

Yes, that board uses the Atheros network chipset which is why it doesn't work. Hard to believe they use that when there's a perfectly good Intel NIC built into the chipset....or to look at it another way, that chipset is cheaper than the Intel "PHY" (physical component interface) that you need to use the built-in Intel NIC.

Tha said, the NIC you linked to is actually mis-labeled in the title, that's not a 1000/GT card...lower down the listing describes the card as an Intel 1000/CT which is the exact card that is usually recommended to solve issues like you are having. You might want to search for the 1000/CT and see if you can find a properly listed one that might be cheaper but $35.00 US is about right (no idea how that exchanges into AU money).

Hi Will,

Thanks for the advice! I've gone and purchased that one, seems to be the cheapest one anyway.

Yeah, i found it strange that they used a 3rd party chipset too. Stupidly, i just assumed it would have an intel chipset ethernet adapter :/

I'll see how it goes with the new NIC.

Thanks again!

Hmmm... This seems odd to me.. What revision is the motherboard? I doubt this would have any issue but mine seems to work fine I believe its v1.0... http://ca.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4143#sp GA-H77M-D3H..

It does have the atheros but im not sure why nothing installed corectly? I know freenas would of probably errored out by now just seems odd to me.. I don't believe I had to do anything to setup the atheros.. Running 8.3.1 x64 here.. Motherboard shipped with F6 - I just updated to F9 stable bios for this board..

Did you have onboard lan disabled in bios when you installed freenas?

Edit: My signature is incorrect.. I confirmed it is the GA-H77M-D3H .. I pulled the box from my closet.. Confirmed rev1.0

It looks like the rev1.o labelled Atheros GBE Ethernet loading AR8151 drivers.. Rev1.1 looks like Atheros AR8161 which doesn't appear to have drivers.. A heads up to anybody thinking about using Gigabyte GA-H77M-D3H.

Added for search : Gigabyte GAH77MD3H - Atheros driver for Atheros 8161/ Atheros 8162.. ALC 8161 / ALC 8162 . This seems to be an actual hardware revision on the motherboard..
