If one wants to run a NFS server then the use of "netgroups" is of great value. Thus NIS needs
to be used.
Minimally ypbind (and supporting stuff) is needed but probably a nis-slave would
enhance performance.

shure. And it's not rocket science to integrate into freenas.
Use of netgroups would make other defiences ( lack of fine-grained export ) less acute

But both are needed for serious large-scale nfs implementations.

Netgroups can be made available both via LDAP and NIS. I would like to see both supported, been trying to retire my NIS server for years.

Looks like freenas exports will respect /etc/netgroup. So you can `ypcat -k netgroup` on an nis client and copy the resulting output over. LDAP populates NIS in a cron, I'll just make this part of the process.

i'd happy with plain old NIS ( it's allthere in freebsd, it only needs some GUI to enable/control)
