Finally got FreeNAS shares accessible on Ubuntu linux, but only if I log in with UID and GID identical with FreeNAS setup.

Is there not a way for FreeNAS to query the user for login credentials so that someone authorized to use the share could access it even if they're not a registered user?

I don’t know what you mean by “registered user”, but the answer to your question is basically no.

You can restrict access to a NFS share by ip (allow or deny certain hosts connecting to the share) but not by user password unless you involve an authentication method such as kerberos.

If you can mount a FreeNAS NFS share on your client, access to data is governed by the standard linux/unix permission modes. Hence in the context of a home network without any kind of domain controller, you add user accounts to FreeNAS to match those on the clients accessing the NFS share.

Had you thought about using SMB shares in linux if you want users to authenticate before accessing data?
