Hi fellow TrueNAS users.

I'm in the process of building my first DYI NAS using TrueNAS Scale. I've looked trough docs and tried googling but couldn't get a clear answer on how important is root dataset encryption.

I will be using a mirror VDEV (2 x 18TB WD Ultrastars). Usage wise it will be mainly a home file server with some apps running (torrent, maybe some media streaming etc).

When a new pool is created, it also created a root dataset with system and ix-applications dirs in it. The only option to encrypt those is to enable dataset encryption (key), as they inherit pool encryption.

I plan to use keyphrase encryption for my own files. What I want to know is what exactly is stored in system and ix-applications dirs and how sensitive that data is it to have those encrypted. Root key encryption adds a hassle of making sure you don't loose the key.

Appreciate is help.
