Hi everyone,

I am having a look to see if FreeNAS can replace my ageing WHS 2011 set up.

Currently, my WHS 2011 box acts as file server, it also runs a light email server (Hmail server) which is very useful. Now I'm not sure if FreeNAS can run any mail servers, (I only use it so I can have IMAP at home, and download from my hosts), but if not I can shove it across onto a Raspberry Pi easily enough as it's very lightweight.

However the bit that is more "interesting" on my set up is the sabnzbd server, couchpotato server and sonarr server. I also use cloud back up, but it's not crashplan, so might have to change providers if crashplan is the only cover that works.

I have a JBOD set up for movies and series and music. If that dies, I can re-encode them as I have most of the originals, not bothered about raid or redundancy - for me that's about speed. I also have the WHS2011 is also a file server which saves all our family documents and gets backed up regularly, as well as synching with a cloud based back up solution. Redundancy is still not a big concern owing to the regular back up - but I guess I could look into that.

At the moment I can choose media I wish to download, either from the couchpotato plug in, or from the Sonarr web interface and a few hours later, everything has been copied to my media storage file server, in the correct folder, and my plex box (separate HTPC box as I use it to feed my projector and transcode etc...), is updated automatically and everything is just great. I love this automation - this is exactly what I need and want to continue with.

Can Freenas replicate this setup? I've been having a play and I understand the point of jails etc... but I'm not sure how to make sure everything works.

What's important to me:

  • File Sharing (Samba)
  • Automatic downloads from sonarr, couchpotato via Sabnzbd to the right folders in my media library
  • Remote backup of essential docs - but I could always map a drive via a windows PC or an always on device somewhere.
Less important is the mail server, but that would be rather nice.

Thanks for your guidance!

If you have proper hardware, FreeNas can do what you want. File storage/server work is what it does best but you can do everything you request either through its jail system or adding a VM

Hardware isn't an issue, I have a couple of boxes with Xeon processors and at the moment have 16gb.

Are there some simpleton guides that you may be able to share with me so that I can have a play at the weekend?

I use FreeNAS primarily to backup my main Windows PC. I have added an Ubuntu VM and use it for PIhole, and added a Windows 10 VM and use it as a Plex server. Some people setup Linux VMs for what you want, some use jails, some will wait untill dockers show up with upcoming FreeNAS updates. How you want to do things is up to you and your comfort level.

Hardware recommendation guide--- https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?resources/hardware-recommendations-guide.12/
programs in jails--- https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...-radarr-jackett-and-transmission-with-vpn.58/
linux VMs--- https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/how-to-how-to-boot-linux-vms-using-uefi.54039/
or use this, starting in step 3 where it says "Choose 'Try Ubuntu without installing' as this will boot it into a Live environment" and use the terminal commands

No worries. Along with the resources section of these forums, there is a users guide link in the header at the top of the page, and FreeNAS itself has a guide link next to the System status monitor.
