Hi erverybody

I'm planning to build a modest FreeNAS build, and for that i want to use an existing PC i own, doing some changes to improve it:

What i have now:

Motherboard:

http://www.tyan.com/Motherboards_S5396_S5396WA2NRF

Ram: 16gb DDR2 ECC

CPU: Dual Intel Xeon E5430 Socket 771LGA

What i plan to buy to improve and build the freeNAS server:

Case:

http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/define-series/define-xl-r2-black-pearl

HDD:

3X 8TB Seagate Archive disks in RaidZ1 : http://www.seagate.com/es/es/enterprise-storage/hard-disk-drives/archive-hdd/

SSD for install:

275gb Crucial MX300 http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/storage-ssd-mx300

PSU:

https://www.pccomponentes.com/corsair-rm750x-750w-80-plus-gold-modular

What do you think about it?

Too old hardware, or it'll be possible to use it?

Thanks

My reply is a fit comment...
Case specs:
ATX, Micro ATX, mini-ITX, E-ATX and XL-ATX motherboard compatibility.

Your Tyan motherboard is an EEB layout.

Are you sure that case will fit that board?

IIRC, any Intel CPU that uses DDR2 also uses a front-side bus, which is a performance killer. We also wouldn't recommend RAIDZ1 for anything larger than 1 TB disks, much less 8 TB--and, IIRC, the Seagate Archive disks don't work well at all with ZFS (though I think @Arwen has some experience with them).

Thanks for all your answers. The use of the nas will be for storage only.

As I can see, the idea to transform my old Xeon pc is not a good idea.

I had another idea, that's perhaps it's a better alternative.

Hp G8 microserver with 4x6tb Wd red and 16gb ram (max allowed) on a raidz1

Is it a better choice?

I'm a little bit worried about the ram amount...

Thanks again

This is sounding more promising. What CPU is in that machine?

For storage only, 16 GB should be adequate. It doesn't meet the 1 GB/TB rule of thumb, but that's a very flexible rule of thumb. You wouldn't want to run a lot of other stuff with that (e.g., Plex), but just for storage it should be OK.

The basic one has this one:

71074/Intel-Celeron-Processor-G1610T-2M-Cache

If there's an option to bump up that CPU a step, it wouldn't hurt, but it should still be adequate.
Thanks a lot. I'll only use it for backup works, and few access to load footage like images or textures.

As for the Seagate 8TB Archive / SMR disks, I use a single one as a backup. It's slow to write, (which is mostly what backups do).
But, for me, time to make a backup is not important. And yes, I do use ZFS on it, (even as a single disk pool). Mostly so I can detect
any failures, which I have had none since I bought it 2 years ago.

Using the Seagate Archive / SMR disks in RAID-Zx may be problematic for performance reasons. Though it should work, I would not
do it unless the application was purely read mostly.

So your current plan of using 4 x 6TB is better, though RAID-Z1 is still not recommended. (You CAN do it, just be aware you should
have GOOD backups. Which you should anyway .

Finally, I bought an HP Ml310e server with 32gb ddr3 ECC ram, and i3 CPU 4130.
